The latest Roman Catholic-Anglican declaration: “Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ” (“The Settle Declaration”, 2005) tackles one of the most controversial issue in the ecumenical dialogues between Roman Catholicism and the Churches issued of the Reformation, that is mariology. The document is organised around four chapters-axes: Mary According to the Scriptures (A), Mary in the Christian Tradition (B), Mary within the Pattern of Grace and Hope (C) and Mary in the Life of the Church (D). The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) have reached a far-going consensus on the studied questions. The conclusions of the statement are as follows: – It is impossible to be faithful to the Scripture without giving the due attention to the person of Mary; – both traditions agree on the central importance of the Theotokos not only in the theological controversies, but also in interpreting and celebrating Mary’s place in the plan of salvation; – God has taken the Blessed Virgin Mary in the fullness of her person into his glory. This faith is consonant with Scripture and can be understood only in the light of Scripture; – in view of her vocation to be the Mother of God, Christ’s redeeming Work reached “back” in Mary to the depth of her being and to her earliest beginnings; – the teaching about Mary in the two definitions of Assumption and the Immaculate Conception, understood within the biblical pattern of the economy of hope and grace, can be said to be consonant with the teaching of the Scriptures and the ancient common traditions; – Mary has a continuing ministry which serves the ministry of Christ, our unique mediator; – Mary and the saints pray for the whole Church and the practice of asking Mary and the saints to pray for us is not communion-dividing. The most encouraging, however, is the proclamation of non-existence of the continuing theological reasons for ecclesial division on the matters of mariology.
