Man is an epicletic entity. This reality is to be understood in a multidimensional and analogous manner. He realizes himself by invoking God, the name of Jesus Christ and in particular the Holy Spirit, but also by calling for the presence of another person. But man is also a pneumatophoric being, that is the carrier of the Holy Spirit. The epicletic character is present in the entire dimension of human existence. This ultimately means calling for acceptance, survival and fulfillment; summoning sense, good, truth, beauty and the fullness of life; requesting assistance in the process of humanizing the world; and longing for the presence of another person. These are the words of an existential prayer instituted and supported by the Holy Spirit. This truth is demonstrated in the biblical texts that mention “the creation’s groans” and the thirsty Samaritan woman, in the epicletic experiences of certain primitive religions as well as in the lives and teachings of Christian mystics. A unique reflection of this reality is the Mother of God, who Eastern Orthodox theology refers to as the Carrier of the Spirit (Pneumatophora, Duchonósica).
