Abstract

Hereby article presents how Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko conceived the idea of patriotism in his sermons which were given when he was celebrating “the Masses for the motherland” between the year 1982 and 1984. Main object of this article is not only the meaning of Fr Popiełuszko’s concept of patriotism, but also it shows what intellectual traditions he drew on his ideas, what patterns of patriotism influenced him and how social, political and cultural background can shape the idea of patriotism. The example of Fr Popiełuszko can help understand that patriotism is not a fixed idea which we accept unchanged from our ancestors but can be created in the way which binds the past with the present time.
