Abstract

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper from before Pius XII’s reform is a remarkably rich and subtle treasury of the Church’s liturgy. This unique rite of the church year contains an extremely carefully selected content, which brings together, in a particularly clear focus, the entire message of the Triduum Sacrum. The texts of the Missal guide us from the events in the Paradise garden to the resurrection. Words, gestures and symbols not only build the atmosphere of this and the following days, but also become a language of catechesis. This liturgy places the participants, in a special way, as living witnesses to what happened in the Cenacle. The potential of the rites to make present the Lord’s Supper is exceptionally strong and irrefutable. An additional value of this liturgy is its catechetical character. The content and forms of liturgical expression bear the hallmarks of various types of catechesis, the most visible of which are the kerygmatic and the anthropological ones. The liturgy of Holy Thursday also exhausts the basic aims of catechesis, teaches, initiates and forms the faithful.
