Marcin Luter jest przede wszystkim egzegetą. Jego interpretacja Pisma Świętego jest najważniejszym źródłem jego myśli teologicznej, w tym jego propozycji reformy Kościoła, a później legitymizacji tzw. „Reformacji”. Działa jako profesor, który prowadzi wykłady, jako kaznodzieja, który odkrywa „dzisiejszość” biblijnego przesłania i jako komentator teologiczny i agitator, który swoje tezy popiera argumentami biblijnymi.
