W poczuciu swej bezradności orant kieruje wołanie do Boga, który zawarł z Izraelem przymierze. Pojęcie ubóstwa w psalmach Izraela rozwijało się, przybierając znaczenia coraz bardziej metaforyczne. W Kazaniu na górze Jezus nadaje ubóstwu najwyższą rangę duchową, uznając je za główny przymiot duchowy w przynależności do królestwa: „Błogosławieni ubodzy w duchu”.
