Abstract

The Evangelical Counsels, if understood properly, lead a Christian to a dynamic engagement in the practice of love, and through that, towards deeper commitment to his neighbors. Service to others requires of him a personal maturity manifested, on the natural level, in harmony of spirit, and on the supernatural level, in the mystical union with God. The practice of the Evangelical Counsels necessitates a conscious inner detachment from earthly goods so that man may walk the path of mystical love towards mystical union with God. This is why the practice of the Evangelical Counsels corresponds with the vocation to sanctity. The Evangelical Counsels may therefore stand as an image of mystical life. They are not a value in themselves but constitute a means leading to mystical union with God. The Counsels are the soil in which the mystical life may thrive, as well as an invitation to a mystical dying to the world in order to achieve the state of spiritual marriage with Christ.
