Abstract

One of the most important questions facing the contemporary man is the question regarding the model of womanhood. The idea is to define who is woman and what is her fundamental vocation. Among the many problems concerning this issue numerous answers appear, frequently contrary to each other. This article’s aim is to contribute to this discussion and present a picture of woman as a wife, contained in one of the Books of Wisdom of the Old Testament, which is the Book of Proverbs, and especially its many fragments included in chapters 10,1-30,33. Many single proverbs constituting the analyzed chapters of this Book, although not bound into bigger thematic fragments, can be arranged into groups presenting advantages of woman as a wife. Concluding the above analysis concerning the advantages of wife, presented in the collection of Prov 10,1-30,33, which include: kindness, sensibility, virtuousness and beauty, one has an impression that these characteristics, desired in the old times, are still up-to-date presently. Which husband wouldn’t like to have a wife possessing such positive traits? Thus, a model of woman as wife appearing from the analyzed Book of Proverbs might be presented to the present times.
