Abstract

The spiritual growth and formation of man have always been one of the most important aspects of the ministry of the Catholic Church. If that is so: the Church’s voice on the subject of educating the young is entirely justified. Throughout centuries it was the Catholic Church’s privilege to do so. The subject of wide – spread education in not only present in the official teaching of the Catholic Church, but also in the day – to – day education of the young, catechism and ministry. The subject matter of the study is focused on the teachings of the Catholic Church on education. In the first chapter of the study, the writer gives a broad outline of the most important Church’s documents and popes’ opinions in this matter. In the second chapter, the Church’s relation with the pupil is portrayed. In the 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th the pupil was regarded as an object of education. The Vatican Council II changed that approach. Nowadays the Church – taking into consideration the fact of development of pedagogical thought – educates children subjectively and views them as protagonists of education.
