Oznacza to, że Bułgakow nie rozumie Chrystusowego krzyża w pierwszym rzędzie jako narzędzia kaźni i śmierci Jezusa z Nazaretu, ale jako znak wypełnienia się odkupieńczo-zbawczego planu Boga. Chrystusowy krzyż Bułgakow widzi więc w kontekście soterycznym i trynitarnym. Stawia postulat większego dowartościowania dogmatu chalcedońskiego.
