Abstract

Some elements of the moral doctrine of the Church are exposed to ambiguous and even faulty interpretations today. There is the theory of the fundamental option among them. John Paul II, the Pope, has given a lot of passages on this topic in his encyclical Veritatis splendor. The problem of the fundamental option is analized in the present article, which consists of four sections: 1. On importance and significance of the fundamental option; 2. Authors of the theory of the fundamental option ‒ fault conceptions and the Church’s living Magisterium reservations; 3. The fundamental option and real behaviour, 4. The fundamental option and a mortal sin. The author, summarizing, states that the theory of the fundamental option has met with incorrect interpretation even among theologians. That is why John Paul II corrects all faults and misunderstandings on this subject in his encyclical.
