Ἀρετή w świetle „Listu Arysteasza do Filokratesa”

Abstract

„List Arysteasza do Filokratesa” to apokryf/pseudoepigraf powstały w kręgu judaizmu hellenistycznego. Jedną z kwestii poruszonych w tym dziele jest określenie, czym jest cnota. Dokładna analiza treści „Listu” (zwłaszcza fragmentów, w których występuje termin ἀρετή) pozwala zauważyć, że jego autor – próbując zdefiniować cnotę – wyraźnie nawiązał zarówno do nurtów filozofii greckiej, jak również do tradycji starotestamentalnej. Celem artykułu jest zatem wykazanie, do jakich systemów filozoficznych odwołał się autor „Listu”, określając cnotę, i w jaki sposób opisywaną przez siebie ἀρετή powiązał z przesłaniem Starego Testamentu.

The “Letter of Aristeas to Philocrates” is an apocrypha/pseudoepigrapha written in Hellenistic Judaism. One of the issues raised in the document is defining the term virtue. A thorough analysis of the content of the “Letter” (and especially those fragments in which the term ἀρετή appears) allows us to notice that its author – in trying to define virtue – clearly referred to both the trends of Greek philosophy and the Old Testament tradition. The aim of the article is therefore to show which philosophical systems the author of the “Letter” referred to when defining the term virtue, and how he connected the ἀρετή he described with the message of the Old Testament.
