Abstract

Their first encounter took place during the Second Vatican Council, they jointly collaborated while working on the first part of the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes. The French theologian supported Archbishop Karol Wojtyła’s efforts to introduce a new chapter on the Church’s activity throughout the world. This section of the document shows part of the close collaboration between the Archbishop of Cracow and Father Congar. Both shared the same concern “how can the Church preach the Gospel to the modem world.” They were searching for a new outlook for the Church, one which would remain true to the Christian tradition while at the same time incorporating itself to the men and society of our time; both a contemporary and traditional church. Father Yves Congar followed John Paul H’s papacy with avid interest. Aware that it could be defined as one which realized, the vision of the Church which we find described in “Gaudium et Spes” Father Congar perceived the contribution of the Pope lo the Ecumenical dialogue. Tactfully, the theologian expressed certain criticism with respect to some of the Holy Father’s thinking. The contribution to the article consists of showing one more mark to better understand Karol Wojtyla the man, his thought process, and his significance as Pope John Paul II. Therefore there is ample proof that Father Yves Congar, may be indeed a witness with much to say on this subject.
