Pozycja A Mind Drawn by a Word. A Meditative Dimension of Selected Epigrams by Richard Crashaw (1612-1649)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II w Krakowie, 2011)The analysis of the relation between religious meditation and epigram representing domain of poetry shows their own common place, a very interesting matter for further research. Reading verses as well as meditating could draw one’s mind to concentrate on an intriguing sign for some time. The process of rereading the text supplies deeper theological senses, spiritual satisfaction and an opportunity to contemplate an object in a way of acquired contemplation following ordinary mental prayer. This drawing role is successfully played by a conceit, when its form (acutum) enchants the mind and it is equivalent to the stirring moment of meditating reason. The epitome of these proprieties is a collection of epigrams by Richard Crashaw. Their Christ-centrism expresses itself in taking into consideration selected mysteries of Jesus’ life presented in the sharpness of meanings crossed in conceit. It is done via accurately selected requisites as well as a variety of poetical and rhetorical means. This young English poet created short verses that strike a reader’s attention and prompt it to consider the prepared literary form and to meditate or contemplate the mystery of Saviour realizing a significant element of the Roman Catholic Church’s theory of meditation. The poetical genius of the author supported by good artistic work and connected with his religion zeal causes that this ability of drawing of a reader works still in the charming way.Pozycja Boska harmonia stworzonego świata w „Kolędzie gospodarskiej” Jacka Liberiusza (1599-1673)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II w Krakowie, 2010)“Kolęda Gospodarska (“A Household Gift ) by a Polish priest Jacek Liberiusz (1599-1673) issued in Cracow in 1669 represents lay old-Polish tradition of giving some gifts on A New Year’s Day but it bears also a religious character referring to the circle of Christmas. The work contains two cycles of sermons directed to various social classes titled respectively: “Kolęda na Nowe lato” (“A Gift on A New Year”) and “Kolęda na Trzy Króle” (“A Gift on Three Kings”). His work reveals the very optimistic vision of harmonious world which results from the fact of being created by God and it consists of four dimensions i.e. space, time, Holy Scripture and an area of social life. Within the latter component two groups are distinguished: the social states which stay in harmony with God’s plan through the fulfillment of their duties and the states which negative marks are ascribed to. The Liberiusz’ achievement ought to be perceived as a realization of the demands of well-formed and successful Catholic reform (so called Counter-Reformation), built on the Tridentinum teaching, Aristotle’s philosophy and Christian stoicism, which after the deep religion crisis (Reformation) and also the cultural breakthrough (Mannerism) was promoting during the XVII century a coherent vision of the world and the man’s position inside.Pozycja Cierpienie i radość w duchowości św. Urszuli LedóchowskiejGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II, 2012)In St. Urszula Ledóchowska’s thought a question of joy and suffering belongs to the whole relationship between man and God. Following via affective meditation Christ’ life she shows that human and religious problems can be placed in a perspective of heavenly joyfulness to be transformed according to a plan of salvation and a mystery of the Cross. As a consequence the problem of suffering is revaluated in the spirit of supernatural love and next it determines a conception of penance and asceticism. Warned about danger of subjectivism man is called to unite his difficulties and tasks with Jesus to experience plenty of their theological values that is a place of God’s revelation, manifestation of love, a merit, a reward and gladness. The joy is characterized by permanence and independence from outer factors. This attitude of God’s child results in apostolate wherein serenity of soul together with a smile are effective means of Christian witness as well signs of the union with God. The conception of transformed joy and the apostolate of smile make a sanctifying way distinguished by both its depth and attractiveness.Pozycja Eucharystia pustelnika z HoggaruGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2007)An insight into the Eucharistic spirituality of the Blessed Charles de Foucauld allows us to discover it and treat it not only as a phenomenon of history, but also as an important point of reference for contemporary spiritual quest. A telling story of a Eucharistic unity and transformation of the Hermit of Hoggar becomes for Christians an argument for the constant return to an inexhaustible mystery, which has an answer to questions of all times and is a source of the most beautiful inspiration.Pozycja Idea of right application. Robert Frost’s motive of going beyond rightly applied to spiritual issuesGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2017)The first aim of this article is an attempt to explain some terminological questions in the field of texts interpretation, here especially of poetry, which bears the character of a theological source (locus theologicus). This aim has been achieved by the idea of the right application of a text, which means respect for its original meaning and at the same time the transition of this meaning beyond the line of direct analysis and interpretation to an outer circle of religious and spiritual issues. This idea in its two forms of the yes- or the yes but-application shows how reading poetry can stimulate life decisions and shape somebody’s spiritual attitude. The second aim of my paper is to expose the right application through the motive of going beyond which has emerged from the poetical work by Robert Frost – one of the most outstanding and prominent artists of the twentieth century.Pozycja Kwestia dobrych uczynków w sporze reformacji i katolicyzmuGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2008)The aim of this article is to describe the Lutheran conception of good deeds and human will and to show the Calvinist solution for this problem. Apart from some criticism they are displayed as a breakthrough in the image of mankind against the contemporary humanism represented by Erazm. It evokes also the answer of Roman Catholic Church included in the Tridentinum teaching in order to complete the vision of argument. This hole reflection helps to see the consequences of this case for spirituality and makes a step forward understanding the way of cooperation human nature with God's grace.Pozycja Nabożeństwa Arcybractwa Męki Pańskiej w Krakowie w wewnętrznej analizie porównawczejGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II, 2011)This article presents the devotions of The Passion Arch-brotherhood in Cracow, i.e. The Devotion o f Fifteen Steps of the Passion and The Litany of the Passion which two textual versions come from editions 1896 and 1997. In the process of internal comparative analysis they both appear as some kind of meditation connected with elements of penance. They are constructed on the base of word ‘to see’ with its space of meanings. The very im portant role is played by some visual factors especially in the older version, while the newer one contains the Eucharistic motive and the reference to the Holy Trinity. They also use good points of litany which in order of communication allow to introduce new pieces of information against steady formulas of contemplation. Both devotions relate to the Franciscan medieval spirituality, mainly to the worship of the Name of Jesus including also the later theologian supplements.Pozycja Postać św. Jana Apostoła i Ewangelisty na gruncie polskiej duchowości potrydenckiejGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2009)The aim of this article is the presentation of the figure of St. John the Apostle in the writings like Legenda aurea by J. de Voragine, Żywoty Świętych Pańskich by P. Skarga SJ, Postylla katolicka, Postylla mniejsza by J. Wujek SJ as well as Arka Testamentu by S. Starowolski in order to follow the perception of this person in the Polish post-Tridentinum spirituality. The aspect of invention appears the diversity of strategies in using of the data taken from the various sources. The analysis focused on the miracles and the life of virtues points out the increasing role of moral attributes at the cost of supernatural deeds typical of the Counter-Reformation model. Outstanding motive of placing St. John's head on Jesus' breast has its deep mystical interpretation made by Starowolski.Pozycja Postawa lęku w obliczu Komunii Świętej w kazaniu Szymona Starowolskiego O godnym przygotowaniu się do przyjęcia Naświętszego Sakramentu (1649)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II, 2010)This article presents a problem of fear which arises in the face of the Holy Communion. Being an expression of the consciousness of sin and of human status it becames also a beginning point of spiritual way right up to sacramental and personal union with God. In connection with this in Starowolski’ sermon there is the description of the development of religious life from the act of rejection sins via the life of virtues and the special kind of prayer, concentrated on Jesus, to the fruits of Eucharist. This analysis has been made in some important contexts like the worries of baroque man and the teaching of Tridentinum. In this old-Polish piece can be noticed also the very positive vison of a man invited to overcome his faults and to take part in unity with Christ. The human freedom allows him to form that relationship while the power of grace appears in some visible elements of an inner life. The conception by Starowolski constitutes the meaningful realization of the Roman Catholic theology going to take a resposibility for the salvation of the whole world.Pozycja Przestrzeń i ruch w opisie zbawienia. Teologiczna interpretacja wybranych wierszy Johna Donne’a (1572-1631)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II, 2010)This article undertakes the issue of spatial motives and motions in the description of religious process of unification in John Donne’s chosen verses: Good Friday, 1613. Riding Westward, sonnet I from Holy Sonnets and A Hymne to Christ, at the Autors Last Going into Germany. They display in their own ways human seeking for salvation motivated by God’s grace yet with taking an account of man’s freedom. For hermeneutics here are proposed some contexts of catholic theology, mainly getting from St. John of the Cross. The statements of few different researchers are also evoked in order to discuss them in regard the concept of religious irony. The lyrical expression of Donnes poems concerns the spiritual experience which can be treated as an over-confessional phenomenon but still close to the catholic world.Pozycja Rola elementów regionalnych w wybranych homiliach księdza Józefa TischneraGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II, 2017)Jozef Tischner, a Polish famous priest, in his homilies performed on Turbacz moutain employs the potency of Polish highlander’s dialect and culture. The various aspects of his work constitute the process of pastoral persuasion in its meditative form. Regional elements mean the priviledged area of communication of the preacher and the faithful to which some threads of general ideas are linked. The accurate achievements—among which the inputting of regional elements as containing human experience (loci communes) into the context of Christian teaching arises—serve homiletical aims. These Tischner’s orations are an important point of reference in a discours on ‘inculturation’ of the Good News.Pozycja Rola Maryi w duchowym życiu Kościoła w ujęciu Wilfreda Le Sage’aGodawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2008)This article concerns the vision of meditation contained in “Vision of Renewal. An Aggiornamento” by Wilfred Le Sage SJ. In the spirit of post-Vaticanum II mariology the author tries to combine intelectual elements with emotional ones in order to show the life of Our Lady as a pattern of Christian life. She is depicted from the wide theological perspective as a Virgin and as a Mother of God who by her part in mission of her Son is also a Mother of the Church. Her sufferings represented as an especially significant aspect of her vocation express the degree of her love developed in all her life. Thanks to the exceptional grace the Mother of God, called “the Woman”, suffered more then all the martyrs and therefore she can be a helper of the regulars also on the way of mistical experience. With a reference to an everyday Christian life the riches of Mary’s soul is the conspicuous sign how the God’s plan is to be fulfilled. Being a student of Jesus she is a teacher of believers and an exemplar of humility and silence directed to God right up to contemplation. The Le Sage’s presentation characterised by the maturity of analysis and conclusions makes the interesting achievment in the process of catholic theological reflection salient for prayer and activity.Pozycja Świętość Jacka Odrowąża OP w ujęciu Jacka Liberiusza CR (1599-1673)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Papieskiego Jana Pawła II w Krakowie, 2009)The analysis of Liberiusz’ sermons allows to see the figure of St. Jacek Odrowąż as an object of an allegorization with a tendency to moralize especially about his castity. In St. Jacek’s relation to God were stressed his own outstanding castity, mortification and sacrifice to God’s service. Liberiusz claims that the quality of that relation constitutes a role of a saint as a mediator between people and the Lord tying in this priest’s function with his personal virtues without any mention of an ordination. With reference to brothers St. Jacek is depicted as this who adapts himself to rules of common life while achieving this ideal of unification he stands out against them in respect of virtues mainly humility following the example of Christ. Liberiusz’ vision contains a synthesis of personal and social elements of sainthood with valours of language.Pozycja Wizja człowieka aktywnego w Akademii pobożności Mikołaja z Mościsk (1559-1632)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2008)This article is a continuation of the previous one titled Conception of good deeds in Reformation and Catholicism controversy, “Polonia Sacra” R XII(XXX) nr 22/66(2008). In this context Akademia pobożności (The Academy of piety) by Mikołaj of Mościska OP (1559-1632) published in 1628, Cracow, constitutes an application of the catholic teaching of the Tridentinum to Polish circumstances. The work embracing the whole spiritual way starting from beginners right up to a state of perfection displays a man as a subject of his deeds who in the cooperation with God's grace determines his own eternal reward. In this regard the thought of the author can be named a herald of the catholic personalism of the XX century. This optimistic image concerning even a psychological question makes as well a base of spiritual practice of which a particular expression is an example of Kasper Drużbicki who was developing a conception of human acts. Both authors let one see the features of the Polish religious life of that time and treat it as a factor of reflection on a present condition of mankind with a lack of personal relation with God.Pozycja Wymiary postawy posłuszeństwa w wybranych kazaniach Fabiana Birkowskiego OP (1566–1636)Godawa, Marcin (Wydawnictwo Naukowe Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Krakowie, 2012)Birkowski’s sermons show a deep vision of obedience which constitutes a program of spiritual life with its particular dimensions. Obedience as a man’s response to God’s plan is a way of getting all goods prepared by God and God alone, i.e. an ultimate accomplishment of a human heart. This posture means a crucial point of restoration of harmony of creatures made in relation to Jesus through Him the universe is subordinated to the Father. Christ’s submission embraces fulfilment of the Father’s will which expresses itself in service to people and in undergoing an evil in order to redeem the world. Inside this perspective every follower of Christ has to involve his whole spiritual life in obedience so that the corporal offering is supplemented by an act of free will and reason to turn from subjectivism towards real happiness. A very specific dimension of obedience concerns mystical life in which human ordinary way of cooperation with grace is to be replaced by mystical passivity. Thanks to it man is being nourished with new food of contemplation in a rhythm of progressive gratification. The Birkowski’s apprehension reflects good points of early modern Catholic theology that is an optimistic vision of man and his liaison with grace. This program enables him to shape his spiritual experience in every respect by supplying rules of life and divine power. The complete system formulated by Birkowski can be regarded as an outstanding achievement against the background of Polish early modern spirituality along with Akademia pobożności (Krakow 1628) by the other Dominican Mikołaj Mościcki. Their mystical threads are also an interesting issue at the beginning of the XVII c., which turned out a flourishing period called later A Golden Age of Polish Spirituality.
