Pozycja Idea uniwersytetu w myśli Jana Pawła IIUrbański, Stanisław (Wydawnictwo Pallottinum, 2013)Universities have played a prominent role in the development of man and his civilisation. They were thoroughly discussed in the teachings of John Paul II. In his works there is a very systematic reflection and analysis of this subject. What emerges is an image that emphasizes the meaning of pursuing the truth, the development and forming of culture, their role in human spiritual growth, creating a creative society and their influence on the shape of societies. Man by nature is directed toward pursuing the truth which is infinite. John Paul II, who was strongly connected with academic centres and universities, presents the truth as a foundation on which a community Universitas of professors and students is formed and developed. Only the truth has an anthropogenic character in the fullest sense of this word, since it refers to its fullness in the person of Jesus Christ. Faith and reason are two tools that allow people to pursue the truth and thus properly shape their humanity. This it the way in which human culture can develop. This culture has a two – stage character – it is the result of human development and at the same time it leads to his development. It affects the shape of life and promotes a hierarchy of values. Here a great contribution of the Church and the Church’s Universities based on an universalist christocentric humanism should be noted. The role of the University, according to John Paul II, is not only the transfer of knowledge and preparing people to build a technocratic world. Man is in the centre, so they have a forming character. Formation in the truth and to the truth is the way of spiritual growth towards the fullness of humanity, which finds its best image in Jesus Christ. The pursuit of development based on the truth creates communities. The University is a community of people which reveals a human ability to go beyond themselves toward others. The pillars of the community are the truth, faith and charity. Universities as creative environments have their primary objective, which is human development. However, as John Paul II noticed, they have to be open to the social dimension. The Church and Universities have a common goal, which is to build the Kingdom of God. In this way society is becoming truly human. All achievements of human thoughts are subordinate to the supernatural vision.
