Nieomylność Biskupa Rzymu jako problem eklezjologiczny ad intra i ad extra
Żmudziński, Marek (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
The infallibility of the Bishop of Rome has never been universally accepted in the Church. Controversies were present during the council debate after the solemn 1870 declaration but, even today, not all doubts have been clarified. They arose from the ecclesiological reflection within the Church, but were also a consequence of the ecumenical dialogue with other Christian communities. The aim of this paper is to present the ecclesial issues that arose soon after Vatican Council I, which led to the schism and to the emergence of the Old Catholic Church, and a similar situation after Vatican Council II, exemplified by the case of H. Küng. There is a significant theological issue of the relation between Church infallibility in the transmission of the saving truth and the papal infallibility in this regard. A key question arises from it: is the Bishop of Rome independent of the Church while announcing the truth with the official stamp of infallibility, or is he just expressing the truth developed within the community of faith? The present reflection and the answer to these questions places the papal subjectivity within the broad spectrum of the Church, anchoring his office in the dimension of the collegium of bishops and of the whole community of believers, who have a supernatural sense of faith. By this train of thought, it is possible to abandon understanding infallibility as a tragedy and to see it as a gift and charisma of the Holy Spirit.

Kontextuell und Offen Für die Weite und das Neue
Waldenfels, Hans (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
Descartes’ slogan “Cogito ergo sum” determines modern thinking by emphasizing the “ego”. Consequently, many people, living in their individual concrete historical setting, tend to become the absolute subjects and masters of their own lives, with their thinking and behavior independent of any other. We call the various factors of their biography – place and date of birth, gender, language, profession, religious affiliation, etc. – “the context”, a term that we borrow from modern biblical exegesis. The vast plurality of egos, however, makes us aware of the existence of innumerable other egos, which – from one’s own point of view – are non-egos; we call them “you” or “we”. Subsequently, the development of modern Western thought is described in view of the concept of “a person”. In the Western thought “a person” is mainly understood as an individual, although in medieval philosophy and theology, it implies individuality and relationality. The difficulty of translation of the term “person” in different cultural surroundings is demonstrated with reference to the Japanese language. We reach the full understanding of other people only if we come to know their limitations, especially in science and technology, and if we restore our sense of the infinite. The Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor reminds us that, in today’s world, not all people have completely abandoned their faith of God and live by radical self-determination, but that there are still quite a few who expect their fulfilment in a life of selflessness, embedded in the hope for a new life to come from the Totally-Other, which we call “God”, and working in solidarity for reconciliation, peace and justice.

Święty Jacek w religijności ludowej i w kulturze polskiej
Świtała-Trybek, Dorota (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
St. Jacob Odrowąż, a Dominican born in Kamień Śląski close to Opole, canonized in 1594 by Clement VIII, is one of the most prominent figures of the thirteenth century. He is considered to be the founder of the Polish province of the Dominican and initiator of the creation of many monasteries in Poland, Prussia, the Czech Republic (Znojmo, Jihlava, Olomouc and Prague) and Austria (Friesach on the border between Styria and Catharinia). He is called the Apostle of the Northern Europe, the Apostle of the Slavs, the Light of the North, Lux ex Silesiae (the Light from Silesia); he carried out evangelization among the peoples inhabiting today’s Baltic countries and the Black Sea grasslands, also in Kievan Rus. This article is an attempt to discuss and analyse the cult of St. Jack in Polish tradition and religious culture. The author presents the biography of the Saint, legends and myths associated with him as well as proverbs, agrarian and culinary customs. The materials used in this article come from field research that the author conducted in the years 2015-2020, as well as from the available literature.

Wartości ludzkie i chrześcijańskie w obrzędach narodzinowych Gidarów z północnego Kamerunu
Różański, Jarosław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
The birth ceremonies of the Gidar (northern Cameroon) – like those of other peoples – constitute one of the first elements of integration within the ethnic community. This article presents, first, a schema of birth ceremonies of the Gidar; next, the values they contain, among others family values, familial solidarity, solidarity with the territorial community, respect for life, and the spiritual vision of life. It also points out the references in these rites to God (Maɳgɘlva) as Creator and Giver of Life. Lastly, it shows the value of these rites for the Catholic community, which is increasingly taking root in the local culture and presenting opportunities for inculturation of the Gospel.

Reinterpretacja integralnego powstawania i rozwoju Kościoła. Niektóre aspekty trynitarnej i antropologicznej eklezjogenezy
Napiórkowski, Andrzej A. (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
By advocating a dynamic concept of the Church, the author deviates from the position that Jesus directly and openly founded the Church. He even puts forward a thesis: this was not the main motive of His earthly activity. In his argumentation, he presents the divine-human community, whose shape depends both, on God's mercy, as well as on human freedom. Jesus, in fact, does not so much establish the institutional and charismatic community but, above all, does the will of his Father “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me” (Jn 4:34). The departure from christomonism in ecclesiology results in the appreciation of trinitology, eschatology, pneumatology, anthropology, mariology and the intensification of missionary and ecumenical aspirations.

Papieża Franciszka prakseologiczna wiarygodność Kościoła. Zarys problematyki
Mastej, Jacenty (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
The aim of this article is to outline issues related to the praxeological credibility of the Church as seen by Pope Francis. After demonstrating the Christic nature of the Church, the author discusses the four praxeological signs of the Church’s credibility. First, her holiness is presented, which Francis describes as the Church’s most beautiful face. Next, Christian joy as a sign of the Church’s credibility is presented. Then the author shows Pope Francis’ desire for the Church to be poor and for the poor. Finally, the ecological face of Ecclesia is uncovered. These considerations lead to the conclusion that praxeological credibility proposed by Francis clearly and convincingly reveals the Christ’s Church to modern man. This Francis’ novelty is manifested, among others, in his teaching style. The way he communicates the truths of the faith and moral life, which are important to him, is simple and direct, abundant in metaphors and vivid and lively images taken from everyday life. Rather than theoretically elaborating on them, the Pope demonstrates their practical application; he gives simple and useful tips that us to commit to a life of faith. Thus, the ecclesiological character of Francis’ message is characterised by ecclesial praxis. Such a praxeological orientation of ecclesiology opens new research perspectives on fundamental theology, which – while showing the Church’s credibility – should focus more on her Christic nature and be inspired by the lives of the faithful. Pope Francis’ praxeological presentation of the Church’s credibility is evident also in that he speaks of the Church with admiration, reverence and love. At the same time, while teaching in truth, he does not avoid difficult and painful subjects because he loves the Church and is aware of her great responsibility for the entire ecclesial community.

Środa Popielcowa w liturgii Kościoła i obrzędowości ludowej. Tradycja a współczesność
Kupisiński, Zdzisław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
The aim of the article is to present Ash Wednesday in the liturgy of the Church and to analyze the way of how this day is experienced in the tradition and folk piety, with particular emphasis on customs and rituals. The author makes a reference to the Church’s documents and draws attention to the values that result from the integration of two forms of worship, i. e. liturgy and folk piety. The author drew on the literature on the subject, as well as his stationary ethnographic fieldwork on annual (1990–1994) and funeral rituals (1997–2006) conducted in the Opoczno and Radom subregions. In recent years he also used the method of participant observation. The article is divided into two parts. In the first one the author recalls the genesis of the Ash Wednesday liturgy and the history of religious rituals performed on that occasion; further he discusses the symbolism of ashes, focusing mainly on the customs that once prevailed in the Polish countryside, namely participation in the liturgy, characteristic fasting meals and penitential clothing. The second part of the study presents Ash Wednesday as the cut-off date between the carnival and Lent period; in the past it was a day of practicing folk rituals of an entertaining nature (e.g. dragging an “Ash Wednesday log” or a “women’s comber – fun”). Many of these customs evoked old pre-Christian Spring rituals, and their practice was for utilitarian gains. The author shows the changes that had taken and are still taking place in Polish society in the perception of the first day of Lent. Moreover, he emphasizes the disappearance of many once popular ceremonies and rituals, highlighting at the same time the relevance and durability of the custom of putting ashes on heads, which still best reflects the meaning of Ash Wednesday.

Joseph Ratzinger’s Idea of Ecumenical Dialogue in Truth: Inspirations, Questions, and Problems
Kaucha, Krzysztof (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
Without doubt Joseph Ratzinger is one of the most important participants of ecumenical dialogue. His theology has a practical impact on that dialogue not only because of his position in the Catholic Church. He has devoted many of his works to ecumenism. This paper is a result of the studies of all his works available in Polish since 2018. During the research it became clear that Ratzinger has offered an original idea of ecumenical dialogue. In this article it is called ‘ecumenical dialogue in truth’ and is described in the first part. Ratzinger insists to recognize in truth the causes of divisions, to accept that divisions among Christians are somehow allowed by the Lord, to see the true and authentic fidelity to the Lord at the bottom of divisions, and to ‘be humble in adopting realistic intermediate goals’. He encourages us to recognize true Christianity in the authentic riches developed by various Traditions over the centuries. The second part of the article is dedicated to new inspirations, questions and some problems which followed these ideas in the field of fundamental theology. Ratzinger touches on the most important problems in fundamental theology, like authentic Christianity, Christian identity, the Church, and credibility. His theology demands reshaping fundamental theology: its main presuppositions, tasks, attitude, terminology and methods.

Przeżycie estetyczne a przeżycie mistyczne – ujęcie w horyzoncie teologicznym
Dzidek, Tadeusz (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
Aesthetic experience and mystical experience are similar in three stages of development. The first is to focus attention on detail. The artist does this in relation to the used element of the surrounding reality by bringing out something special in it, while the mystic seeks God's footprints in the natural world. In the second stage, the artist pushes away what distracts him, and he also frees himself from artistic conventions to create his intended work in an original way. In turn, the mystic cleanses himself of his weaknesses and attachment to the world. In the third stage, the artist can contemplate his work, and the mystic is able to experience the presence of God. The artist's temporary satisfaction passes. And in its place there is a sense of inadequacy between the intended idea and its inefficient implementation in a limited form. On the other hand, the mystic, after a moment's experience of God's presence, is aware that the object of his desire exceeds the limits of all possibilities of knowledge. Beauty and God ap-pear as the two names of the One.

Podstawy prymatu oraz misja Biskupa Rzymu według kardynała Gerharda L. Müllera
Artemiuk, Przemysław (Wydawnictwo Towarzystwa Naukowego Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego, 2020)
The question about the place and the role of the pope in the Catholic Church appears very clearly in the theological thought of the cardinal G.L. Müller (born in 1947). The German hierarch, when reflecting on this issue, does so in an orderly and systematic way, combining dogmatic themes with a fundamental theological perspective. Papacy, according to G.L. Müller is a historical fact that has its source in the mystery of Revelation. Reflecting on this issue, present in the thought of the theologian, the author refers to his key texts, primarily to the work Der Papst. Sendung und Auftrag published in 2017, as well as to the statements included in the volume of conversations with the cardinal, carried out by Paweł Lisicki. In the presented article, the author first presents the interpretation of the classic texts about primacy proposed by cardinal Müller. Then, he discusses the earliest testimonies of Tradition, which the German theologian refers to. Next, he draws attention to the mission of the papal office. Finally, he draws conclusions from the perspective of the fundamental ecclesiology.
