Abstrakt
Throughout J.H. Newman’s teachings, conscience has a significant position. The Blessed Cardinal not only wrote about conscience, but also his entire life pointed to the indispensable role of this element. In the great British thinker’s moral assessment, conscience is an echo of the voice of God; therefore, to prevent the unique voice of God from being stifled, conscience must be shaped properly. The unique character of conscience is also a factor leading to the discovery of the truth in its special moral dimension. Moral truth, as Newman claims, can be gained through patient studying and calm reflection. This article attempts to demonstrate the life journey of the English scholar in terms of defining and understanding moral truth. Furthermore, the paper provides useful guidelines for the modern reader, who stands at the crossroads of various forms of contemporary moral trends. In this context, the approach of the British thinker is a clue in the search for the most relevant answers to questions pertaining to moral truth.
