Portraits are usually commanded. A self-portrait are an expression of an artist’s needs. One painting that is made not by a man’s hand but by the hand of God Himself is the Shroud of Turin. This is the first self-portrait painted by God. Until the beginning of the seventeenth century, all of Europe’s greatest painters such as Cimabue, Masaccio, Bellini, Antonello da Messina, Tycian, Rafael, Dürer, while painting Jesus Christ, turned to the image depicted on the Shroud of Turin. Paintings made by a man’s hand, faces on coloured-up wedding photos, grimaces. How very often they do uncover the dirt, sin or ugliness. As if these were the values to be emphasized. From a doctrinal standpoint each man is to be looked upon as an icon of God. What icon am I? I – that means, each of us, every artist.
