Motywy ikonograficzne postaci św. Stanisława Szczepanowskiego na podstawie zabytków z terenu diecezji tarnowskiej

Abstract

The article is an effort to system atize the iconography of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr – based on many ancient relics in the Tarnów diocese. Szczepanów the birthplace of the Saint is in this diocese. The author belives th at the oldest image of St. Stanislaus in this diocese is a gothic sculpture in wood from 1350-60, coming from the church in Zawada near Tarnów. To the most precious relics belong the paintings in Szczepanów: St. Stanislaus „in trono” from the XVI-th century and St. Stanislaus in the group „Santa Conversazione” from about 1518 and also two triptych wings from about 1500; they contain 12 episodes from St. Stanislaus’ life and are kept in the diocese museum in Tarnów. In all the rich iconography of St. Stanislaus we can segregate 4 groups of content them es namely: 1. devotional paintings with a single figure of the Saint (the Saint without attribute, with attribute and on the throne), 2. devotional paintings with St. Stanislaus among other saints (choir of patrons, Santa Conversazione and adoration of the Virgin by the Saints), 3. more or less extended narration cycles about the Saint’s life and 4. paintings showing single episodes from the Saint’s life.
